The Great Bell Chant — The End of Suffering — For Animals and You

When you go vegan for the animals it’s a reason to celebrate because you no longer contribute to animal suffering. But animals continue to be exploited and slaughtered all over the world and knowing this is difficult for us to bear.

This guided meditation, by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, will bring you comfort, as well as help put into words your desire to end the suffering of all living beings everywhere.

Why It’s Important To Be a Compassionate Vegan

Knowing that vast numbers of animals are being butchered globally every second for human greed can make vegan advocates feel impotent and so it’s understandable that we would want to find a target for our anger. But treating farmers, manufacturers, consumers, friends, colleagues, family, or anyone with contempt is counter-productive.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

—Martin Luther King, Jr. minister, civil rights activist

In fact, aiming anger and hatred at others initiates a cycle of revenge, retribution, contempt, and scorn. And it’s demoralizing and exhausting for us.

In the meantime, animals continue to be slaughtered.

Rather meditate on love and compassion. Visualize a reality where farmed animals are free from suffering and you will feel peace.

You will be re-energized to take constructive steps towards creating a compassionate world.

Showing compassion toward other people on their vegan journey — even if they haven’t begun it yet — is a priceless gift as it will help them progress towards a life where they can also live in alignment with their true inner values.

So, next time you feel anger, hopelessness, frustration, sadness or powerlessness about the plight of animals, find a quiet space and meditate on The Great Bell Chant. Then come back stronger than before to advocate for animals and help people live a vegan life.

The Great Bell Chant (The End of Suffering) — Transcript

May the sound of this bell penetrate deep into the cosmos
Even in the darkest spots living beings are able to hear it clearly
So that all suffering in them ceases, understanding comes to their heart
And they transcend the path of sorrow and death.

The universal dharma door is already open
The sound of the rising tide is heard clearly
The miracle happens
A beautiful child appears in the heart of the lotus flower

One single drop of this compassionate water is enough to bring back the refreshing spring to our mountains and rivers.
Listening to the bell I feel the afflictions in me begin to dissolve
My mind calm, my body relaxed
A smile is born on my lips

Following the sound of the bell, my breath brings me back to the safe island of mindfulness
In the garden of my heart, the flowers of peace bloom beautifully.

Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen Master, global spiritual leader, poet, and peace activist
